Why choose Project Management as a career?

In this blog piece our Prince Lecturer Brian Cleere outlines why Project Management is an excellent career choice.

Having been in the Project Management business for almost 30 years now I have seen the changing face if it particularly in the last 5 years. Previously project management was seen as a subsidiary competency to traditional operation roles such as engineering, science, finance, marketing, production, HR and sales. But now most businesses see the benefit of employing full time professional project managers. Like many jobs, project managers will need a variety of skills in order to be successful. In addition to general business skills, project management must also be effective problem solvers, have good computational skills and effective communicators. For those who enjoy varied responsibilities, project management is a good career to pursue.

But you might also be amazed with the following stats:

  • The demand for project managers is high. The Project Management Institute (PMI)® expects to see 22 million new project management job openings through 2027. (pmi.org)
  • Project managers are needed in a wide variety of industries. Although quite common in the IT field, project-oriented work is now an integral part of business services, finance and insurance, oil/gas, manufacturing, construction, and utility sectors, all over the world.
  • Salaries for project managers are highly competitive. According to Glassdoor, the national average entry-level project manager salary is $59,680, £45,500 or €53,000.
  • Project Managers will have a plethora of skills valuable to most industry sectors.
  • There are plenty of opportunities for advancement. Highly experienced, specialized, certified project managers can expect to see double the entry-level salary or more.
  • You can really make a difference. Project managers make a direct impact on the business because they assist in the delivery of change within the business which keeps the business relevant.
  • Some consider project management CEO training. Both roles face similar challenges: working with and for investors, project teams, and clients, as well as dealing with many of the same pressures and financial restraints.
  • Project managers are always learning. For those who embrace change and love seeing what’s new, project managers must be ready to regularly refresh their knowledge of process and structure, new markets, technology, products and services, and customers.
